KUALA LUMPUR (April 20): Malaysia reported 36 new cases as of noon today — the lowest daily figure since March 14, four days before the government imposed the nationwide movement control order (MCO) on March 18.

The number of daily cases fell from 84 reported yesterday, and is also the lowest since the MCO began; the second lowest daily figure of 54 cases was reported on Saturday (April 18).

This is also the fifth time since the order was executed that new infections fell below 100 cases.

Meanwhile, daily recoveries were at 98, exceeding the number of new cases.

This brings the number of active cases to 2,041, down from 2,103 on Sunday (April 19).

There was no death reported today, so the death toll remains at 89, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

To date, 45 patients were treated in intensive care unit, with 28 of them needing respiratory assistance.

Currently, Malaysia's total infection number stands at 5,425, while the total number of cured cased is 3,295.

Malaysia has the fourth-highest number of Covid-19 infections in Southeast Asia at 5,425, after Singapore reported 1,426 new cases today, bringing the tally there to 8,014, followed by Indonesia (6,760) and the Philippines (6,459).

Noor Hisham added that the declining trend of daily infections lately is due to the proactive and aggressive actions taken by the Ministry of Health in detecting Covid-19 cases, especially in the past two weeks.

However, he cautioned that the number of daily infections may rise in the next two weeks as the ministry is still tracking Covid-19 cases, especially in some areas that have been put under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO), as well as among Malaysians who just return from the overseas.

While Selangor remains the state with the highest number of confirmed infections — 1,345 cases after adding two new infections — other states that recorded zero cases as of noon today include Perak (252 cases), Kelantan (155 cases), Pulau Pinang (119 cases), Terengganu (109 cases), Kedah (94 cases), Perlis (18 cases) and Labuan (16 cases).
