KUALA LUMPUR (April 11): The number of active Covid-19 cases may drop to 2,033 by the end of the second phase of the movement control order (MCO) which falls on next Tuesday, April 14.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there are 2,462 active cases currently. According to the trajectory, the active cases will decline to around 2,033.

This implies a drop of about 429 active cases against 2,462 currently.

Speaking at the daily press briefing today, Noor Hisham said this is a sign that the first and second phase of the MCO has succeeded in curbing the spread of Covid-19 in communities.

He advises the public to stay home and maintain social distance to prevent the outbreak from getting worse.

The Ministry of Health today announced there were 184 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the country’s total number of positive cases to 4,530.

Meanwhile, there were 165 recoveries today. However, the daily recoveries figure was lower compared with 222 yesterday. The total number of cured cases climbed to 1,995, which is 44% of the total infections.

The death toll rose to 73 with three new deaths reported.

To date, Malaysia is the country with the highest number of cases in Asean, followed by the Philippines (4,428 cases), Indonesia (3,842 cases), Thailand (2,518) and Singapore (2,108).

When asked on the rationale for letting barbers resume operations, given that their services involve close contact, Noor Hisham responded by saying the MoH's stance is that the measures under Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the MCO must be maintained and tightened in the third phase.

Meanwhile, on the Ministry of Higher Education’s proposal to allow students to return to their hometowns, he pleaded for the ministry’s patience as Phase 3 of the MCO is of utmost importance.

“We have to tighten the Phase 1 and Phase 2 measures as we enter into Phase 3 of the MCO, in order to reduce the number of cases. Based on our estimates, we will only be successful if all Malaysians cooperate.

“It is not impossible [to reduce the number of cases], but everyone needs to work together,” said Noor Hisham.
