KUALA LUMPUR (July 27): New cases of Covid-19 in Malaysia dropped to seven today after three straight days of double-digit numbers, including 13 yesterday.

Today was the 27th day the country recorded single-digit infections since the movement control order (MCO) was implemented on March 18. The single-digit trend started on June 8.

Despite the low number of new cases, the number of active cases rose further to 179 from yesterday’s figure of 173, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Active cases had been falling until a reversal of the downtrend on July 16, with the numbers rising over the subsequent days to breach the 100-case mark on July 19.

Today’s new cases raised the cumulative tally of the country to 8,904, of which 8,601 or 96.6% of the patients had recovered, including one new recovery today, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

No new deaths were reported by the ministry today, thus the country’s Covid-19 death toll remained at 124.

Noor Hisham said that of the seven new cases, three were local transmissions and four were imported cases.

“There were no locally-transmitted cases in the country that involved foreigners. All three [locally-transmitted cases] involved Malaysians and were detected in Sabah through pre-surgery screening.

“Two cases were treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, while one case was treated at the Likas Women and Children's Hospital,” he said at a media briefing.

Meanwhile, of the four imported cases, three involved Malaysians, and one was a foreigner married to a Malaysian citizen.

The four imported cases involved returnees from Pakistan (detected in Sabah), Russia (detected in Selangor), Australia (detected in Kuala Lumpur) and Indonesia (detected in Kuala Lumpur), said Noor Hisham.
