KUALA LUMPUR (July 27): The new Covid-19 cluster in Bukit Tiram, Johor reported two days ago involves a case imported from the Philippines, health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.
However, Noor Hisham said investigations to identify the index case as well as the source of infections are still ongoing.
On Saturday, the ministry said two confirmed cases were detected at a religious centre in Taman Bukit Tiram, involving two foreign workers there.
The two workers displayed symptoms on July 15 but did not seek immediate treatment at any health facility. They were found to be Covid-19 positive last Friday after undergoing screening.
To curb further infections, Noor Hisham said active case detection will be carried out in the Bukit Tiram cluster, with the focus on close contacts and individuals who had come to the religious centre.
“Besides conducting screening and active case detection, high-risk individuals or those who are related to this group also are encouraged to do Covid-19 self-assessment. If they display symptoms, they should contact the nearest clinic or district health office to get treatment.
“The Ministry of Health urges that this group not be stigmatised or isolated by society. We need to help and encourage them to come forward to undergo [Covid-19] tests. This will help to curb the Covid-19 spread in our country,” said Noor Hisham during a media briefing.
The director-general noted that between July 19 and Saturday, 120 new cases were reported to the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC).
He said the three states which recorded the highest numbers of Covid-19 cases were Sarawak (48 cases), Johor (29) and Selangor (19).
Malaysia reported seven new cases today, bringing the cumulative number of cases in the country to 8,904. The total number of recoveries stood at 8,601.
One Covid-19 patient was discharged today, said Noor Hisham.
No new Covid-19 deaths were reported today, keeping the country’s death toll at 124.
