KUALA LUMPUR (June 10): Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah broke into tears today when announcing the retirement of his deputy Datuk Dr Rohaizat Yon.

According to him, Dr Rohaizat, who holds the position of deputy director-general of health (medical), has served the Ministry of Health (MoH) for 35 years and 10 days.

“Today marks the last day for one of my ‘war generals’, Dr Rohaizat, as his mandatory retirement falls on June 10. He has been with the MoH in the fight against Covid-19 and I thank him for his full commitment and service for the Malaysian public,” he said while concluding his daily Covid-19 briefing in Putrajaya today.

Responding to Dr Noor Hisham’s remarks, Dr Rohaizat thanked the media for the continuous nationwide news coverage of the Covid-19 situation in the country, since MoH’s first daily briefing on the pandemic.

“The [news] coverage is not for us [at MoH] but it is for the public. The information is crucial for the public. Let me remind the public again that the most effective vaccine for Covid-19 at the moment is social distancing and the wearing of face masks.

“We have seen excellent results from these preventive measures. Who knows if we will achieve zero new cases tomorrow or the day after. The media plays a crucial role in relaying fast and accurate information to the public for their peace of mind,” he said, adding that the mainstream media have also helped the government to debunk fake news on Covid-19.
