KUALA LUMPUR (March 29): Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali has resigned from his post, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, will seek an audience with Melaka's Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam to present the name of the candidate to succeed Sulaiman, Bernama reported.

In confirming Sulaiman's resignation, Zahid said at a press conference in Pahang that he has received Sulaiman's resignation letter, according to reports.

Sulaiman, who is Umno Melaka's secretary, was appointed as Melaka's chief minister in March 2020.

On Monday, Zahid said that Melaka may witness the formation of a new Unity Government in line with the formation of the government at the federal level.

Melaka is currently fully governed by Barisan Nasional, following a landslide win at the state election in November 2021.
