KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 12): Nurul Izzah Anwar said she no longer serves as senior advisor on economics and finance to the prime minister, six weeks into the role.

She said this on Sunday (Feb 12), as she accepted the offer to co-head the secretariat for the advisory committee to the finance minister.

“It is an invitation that I humbly accept,” she said in a statement.

“With this new role, I will no longer serve as senior advisor on economics and finance to the prime minister.

“It is an honour to be able to contribute and support efforts to chart a better future for Malaysia. I thank the prime minister for the trust he placed in me,” she said.

Nurul Izzah added that she is grateful for all the support from the public, within the civil service and the broader community of the government.

“Malaysians have collectively envisioned a better and more united future led by YAB (Yang Amat Berhormat) Prime Minister and the unity government. I look forward to assisting YBhg (Yang Bahagia) Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican and the other committee members in serving our beloved nation,” she added.

The committee’s chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican said in an earlier statement that he offered the role to Nurul Izzah, who will co-head the secretariat with Khairil Anuar Ramli.

Nurul Izzah’s appointment as advisor to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, effective Jan 3, drew public attention. The PKR vice president is also Anwar’s daughter.

Amid criticism over the appointment, some have come out to defend Nurul Izzah, pointing to how she has demonstrated sound political and policy independence throughout her political career.
