KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 11): Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales expanded 13.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM133.9 billion in November 2022, mainly boosted by the growth in the retail trade sub-sector, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

For month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, the sales value of wholesale and retail trade gained 0.2%, contributed by motor vehicles (+1.7) and retail trade (+0.7%).

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the retail trade sub-sector grew 22.8% y-o-y to RM58.7 billion. Wholesale trade grew 5.6% to RM59.5 billion while motor vehicles expanded 17.2% to RM15.7 billion.

“The retail trade sub-sector growth of 22.8% in November 2022 was supported by retail sales in non-specialised stores which rose 23.9%, or RM4.2 billion, to RM22 billion,” he said in a statement.

Other groups in this sub-sector also recorded positive growth, namely retail sales in specialised stores at 32.8%, retail sales of automotive fuels at 40.9%, retail sales of household goods at 14.8%, and retail sales of information and communication equipment at 10.3%.

Retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco rose 14.4%, retail sales of cultural and recreation goods rose 5.9%, retail sales not in stores, stalls, or market rose 10.8%, and retail sales in stalls and market rose 18.5%.

For a m-o-m comparison, sales in this sub-sector went up 0.7%, contributed by retail sales in non-specialised stores (+1.6%), retail sales in specialised stores (+0.4%) and retail sales of automotive fuels (+1.4%).

The wholesale trade sub-sector increased 5.6%, mainly attributed to the wholesale of household goods, which grew 14.4% to RM12.5 billion.

Other groups that contributed to this growth were wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+6%), wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (+9.4%), wholesale of machinery, equipment and supplies (+3.9%), wholesale on a fee or contract basis (+14.7%), non-specialised wholesale trade (+6.2%), and other specialised wholesale (+0.1%).

However, for a m-o-m comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased by 0.6%.

Meanwhile, the 17.2% growth in the motor vehicles sub-sector was spearheaded by sales of motor vehicles, parts and accessories with a 32.8% increase to RM4.1 billion, followed by sales of motor vehicles, which rose 9.8% to RM8.4 billion.

For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased by 1.7%, underpinned by the 1.6% growth in the sales of motor vehicles.

“Index of retail sale over the internet for November 2022 recorded 9.3% growth y-o-y.

"For seasonally adjusted value index, it decreased 6% compared against the previous month," the chief statistician noted.

In terms of volume index, wholesale and retail trade for November 2022 registered a y-o-y growth of 9.7%.

The expansion was contributed by retail trade (+18.3%), motor vehicles (+8.3%), and wholesale trade (+0.6%).

For the seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 1.1% m-o-m.
