KUALA LUMPUR (May 31): Music is an intrinsic part of our daily lives, whether it’s waiting for the latest hits to drop or indulging in nostalgic tunes.

Little do we know that when an artist releases a new song, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

With the emergence of the Internet and social media, one would think all they need is good exposure and attention to generate income.

However, they risk losing out on royalties owed to them if their intellectual property (IP) is not adequately protected.

Doing so, however, is a lot more complicated than it appears from the outside, so it is no wonder that many Malaysian artists and musicians continue to lose out.

DigitalEdge takes a behind-the-scenes look at Malaysia’s music industry and the importance of music IP, especially in the digital world and the red tape associated with an artist’s ability to get the money that it is owing to them when their music is played.

Read more about it in The Edge Malaysia weekly's May 31 edition.
