IT might be a tale as old as time, but the Mid-Autumn Festival is annually celebrated with colour, light and the round-sweet pastries called mooncakes to commemorate the mythological story of the goddess of the moon, Chang’e.

The traditional cakes made with lotus paste and seeds have certainly evolved with the times, and now you can sample all the different flavours in a first-of-its-kind mooncake bazaar at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. From the classic favourites to the creative and intriguing, there is a wide range of selections from 19 food retailers and hotels, including The Mandarin Oriental, The Westin, Pullman, The Saujana, and brands such as Godiva, Komugi, TWG Tea, Moo Cow and New Shanghai.

Apart from the cakes, there are accompanying tea selections and other treats at the bazaar, which is held at the mall’s Japanese precinct, Tokyo Street. Decorated with a distinctively oriental style, the bazaar is also held in conjunction with the Jugoya festival, a Japanese celebration to honour the autumn moon.

As such, visitors who dress up in yukatas or traditional costumes during the weekend will be given free lanterns. In addition, Pavilion Junior members and children will be able to take part in lantern-making workshops every weekend this September.

The Pavilion mooncake bazaar is on till Sept 27. Shoppers who spend RM300 or more (RM150 with Citi Visa cards) at specialty stores will receive a complimentary mooncake.  For more information, call (03) 2118 8833.
