IT IS amazing to see corporate Malaysia joining the chorus in support of The Edge Kuala Lumpur Rat Race 2015, a charity project and corporate responsibility initiative organised by The Edge Media Group.

Six companies from various sectors have committed more than RM600,000 as sponsors of this year’s Rat Race.

Property developer Eco World Development Group Bhd took up the “Powered By” sponsorship package and Affin Hwang Capital, the “Partnered By” category.

Ceramic and porcelain tile provider Feruni Ceramiche Sdn Bhd and Negri Sembilan-based property developer Matrix Concepts Holdings Bhd are gold sponsors while Vistage Malaysia Sdn Bhd is a silver sponsor and property developer Land & General Bhd, a bronze sponsor.

“The Rat Race is a novel effort that underscores social inclusion and charity. Proceeds will be channelled to various charitable organisations and The Edge Education Foundation, which focuses on financial and English literacy,” says The Edge Media Group publisher and group CEO Ho Kay Tat.

So, what drives companies to sponsor the Rat Race?

“This run is for a noble cause. It is always heartening to participate in any event that gives back to society. We are in this because we want to create a better tomorrow,” EcoWorld chief operating officer Datuk S Rajoo says, adding that the developer’s team is excited about the upcoming run. This is the second time EcoWorld is assuming the “Powered By” mantle.

Casting an “outthink and outperform” mantra, Affin Hwang Capital hopes that the new partnership forged with The Edge Media Group will pave the way for more such socially beneficial initiatives.

“Together, we bring our financial expertise to drive our social inclusion agenda to tackle evolving issues and challenges that are getting more complex. We are not just an ordinary boutique firm but a company that cares for every cause of concern,” notes Affin Hwang Asset Management chief marketing officer Chan Ai Mei. This is Affin Hwang Capital’s maiden participation as a sponsor.

Sponsoring the Rat Race for the fourth time, Feruni managing director C C Ngei sums up the company’s participation in a simple statement: “It just feels good to give back.”

Ngei, however, couldn’t help adding, “It is our ambition to touch everyone’s life. Our goal is to inspire everyone to be committed to creating a positive impact and contributing towards the greater good of the community. As the saying goes, ‘Small things can lead to bigger things’.”

As for Matrix Concepts, executive director Datuk Batumalai Ramasamy says the group’s strategic alliance in this year’s Rat Race is in line with the company’s vision to provide premier and quality education to future generations.

“This is an innovative way to contribute and improve the lives of underprivileged children. In fact, education should be at the forefront of everybody’s mind and we are proud to be one of the sponsors,” he says. This is the second time Matrix Concepts is sponsoring the run.

Sherine Cheng, executive director of first-time sponsor Vistage, says their participation gives the company an opportunity to play a role model and create awareness among its staff of the importance of CR as well as support a worthy cause.

“The objective of the Rat Race to raise funds for education is in line with what Vistage is doing — continuous education and development for CEOs, executives and business owners,” she says, adding that Vistage has been doing CR since its inception, through donations as well as its employees’ time and energy.

Land & General managing director Low Gay Teck says the company’s participation in this year’s Rat Race was inspired by its motto “Building Value for Tomorrow”. The company is sponsoring the race for the second time.

“This is a good CR initiative — based not solely on monetary contributions but also on participation by people of all levels, ages, races and genders,” Low says.

The Edge Media Group welcomes all who want to join this cause by putting on their running shoes to pound the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Sept 8.
