KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 17): Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah claims there is more evidence in the SRC International case that has been kept from the defence's knowledge.

In a press conference on Friday, the lawyer revealed that this evidence has been suppressed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the prosecution in the SRC International case.

“We have information that there is new evidence that was suppressed, which was not given to us by the MACC or the prosecution. But now, we have heard (about it),” he said, adding that this new evidence will be added to Najib’s appeal at the Federal Court against his SRC International verdict.

“We can’t say (what the evidence is) yet. We have to confirm it first,” he said.

He said his team is working on getting the documents on this allegedly suppressed evidence and that when they do, they will be adduced as part of Najib’s Federal Court appeal.

“We will put it in another application to adduce the new evidence at the Federal court,” he said, adding he hopes to be able to gather the proof of such hidden evidence, which he said will be no easy feat, in the next two months.

In July last year, Najib was found guilty of three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), one count of power abuse, and three counts of money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International, which was formerly a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail for each of the CBT and money laundering charges, and 12 years of jail and a fine of RM210 million for abuse of power. As the jail sentences were ordered to run concurrently, he would only spend 12 years in jail.

As the Court of Appeal on Dec 8 rejected his appeal to set aside the conviction, Najib is taking his appeal to the Federal Court.
