KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): The Ministry of Health (MoH) said the seven new Covid-19 cases from the Tawar cluster that were reported today — four cases in Kedah and three in Penang — are the third generation of infections. 

This brought the total cases in the Tawar cluster to 46, according to health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. 

Up until noon today, some 1,135 people in the cluster had been screened, according to his statement.

Providing the breakdown of screening, Noor Hisham said 918 individuals had been screened in Kedah. So far, 39 individuals had tested positive, 655 are negative while 224 are waiting for their results.

In Penang, 208 individuals had been screened, seven of which had tested positive. Meanwhile, 175 are negative while the remaining 26 individuals are waiting for their results.

In Perak, no positive cases had been detected so far by the ministry from nine individuals who had been screened. Noor Hisham said eight people were negative for the virus while the last individual is waiting for results.

“Active Case Detection screening [of] close contacts are still ongoing for this cluster and the latest situation will be informed from time to time,” said Noor Hisham.

Commenting on the Sala cluster, which emerged in Kedah, Noor Hisham said two new Covid-19 positive cases were found in the cluster, bringing its total positive cases to six.

Some 273 individuals had been screened for the cluster, comprising 269 individuals in Kedah and four individuals in Penang.

In Kedah, six had tested positive for the virus, 214 are negative while the remaining 49 are waiting for results.

However, in Penang, no Covid-19 positive cases were detected by the ministry from the four individuals who went for screening.

The ministry announced 12 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, bringing the total cases nationwide to 9,212.

Malaysia’s active cases stood at 211, with eight patients in intensive care and two of them needing ventilator support.

No new Covid-19 deaths were reported today, thus the total Covid-19 fatalities in the country still remained at 125, translating into 1.36% of overall cases.

On recoveries, 17 Covid-19 patients have recovered, bringing total recoveries to 8,876.
