KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 25): A seismic-like event, possible earthquake, was reported on Friday morning (Feb 25) near Kuala Lumpur due to a “very strong" 6.0 magnitude earthquake at 64km north-west of Bukittinggi in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province at 9.39am, according to updates on the VolcanoDiscovery website.

"We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Feb 25, 2022 (GMT) at approximately 01:40 GMT.

"There are no details yet of the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes. The location, magnitude and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model.

"They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency," VolcanoDiscovery noted.

Kuala Lumpur is a federal territory located within the Klang Valley in Peninsular Malaysia’s west coast across the Strait of Malacca from Sumatra.

A Klang Valley resident told theedgemarkets.com about the Sumatra earthquake’s tremor, which was felt in Malaysia: "Seated at the dining table, we felt our chairs move first and then saw our TV wobbling!"

The Sumatra earthquake tremor was felt in areas including the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), where the iconic Petronas Twin Towers are located, according to another Klang Valley resident.

"My son's office [at] Naza Tower in [the] KLCC area felt it (the tremor) and [people are] vacating [the] building (Naza Tower)," the Klang Valley resident elaborated.
