(July 31): PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli today said that he will reveal evidence next week that will link several individuals from Umno Youth to Mara's controversial property purchases in Melbourne.

Rafizi said he would raise the Mara property scandal again and reveal the evidence, which includes proof of purchase that have been acquired from Australia and which "clearly" shows the involvement of these individuals from Umno Youth.

His remarks come as Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun filed a suit against the Pandan MP for implicating him in the scandal that was highlighted by an Australian newspaper recently.

"I have made the decision to bring back the Mara scandal issue and its links with Umno Youth next week," Rafizi said in a statement today.

"When these evidence are presented next week, then Khairul and Khairy Jamaluddin (Umno Youth chief) cannot deny the involvement of certain individuals from among Umno Youth in the Mara scandal."

Mara's property purchases in Australia have attracted controversy after a report by Australian newspaper The Age that a “top” Mara officer, senior official and former politician had allegedly spent millions of government funds to buy an apartment block in Melbourne in a property scam.

The report alleged that “a group of super-rich Malaysian officials” overpaid by A$4.75 million (RM13.8 million) for an apartment block, called Dudley International House, in the city in 2013.

The Australian Federal Police also raided a number of properties and seized computers and files from a house in South Vermont leased to an ex-Malaysian after Melbourne daily The Age exposed kickbacks in the transactions.

Earlier this month, Rafizi, who is also the National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) director alleged that several Umno Youth members and those close to them had been involved in the property deal in Australia by Mara which was "over-stated" by RM63 million.

Producing documents, he claimed that five individuals were involved in signing off the property purchase though they had nothing to do with Mara at the time of the purchase.

Welcoming Khairul's suit, Rafizi said he was prepared to defend himself and will present the facts of the scandal in court, adding that his lawyers have been informed of the matter.

"However, I ask that Khairul Azwan Harun concentrate more on giving an explanation to the people about the involvement of Umno Youth leaders in the scandal rather than busying himself by filing suits in court as that will not help improve the image of Umno Youth among the people," he added. – The Malaysian Insider
