KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 27): Prasarana Malaysia Bhd signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Indonesian state-owned MRT Jakarta for a planned collaboration in rail transport in Jakarta.

In a statement today, Prasarana said the MOU was expected to spearhead the Malaysian government-owned company's expansion into the Indonesian rail-transport market.

Prasarana said both companies would "explore the possibility of exchanges in technical and operational information, expertise, and know-how to further enhance and develop their mutual capabilities."

"Made possible by the excellent bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia, the MOU would also see Prasarana and MRT Jakarta jointly embarking on collaboration in various areas relating to rail and metro operations in Jakarta," Prasarana said.

According to Prasarana, MRT Jakarta was set up to develop and run rail-based public transport services in Jakarta.

Prasarana said MRT Jakarta operates in two corridors there, covering the south-to-north and east-to-West portions.

In Malaysia, Prasarana owns and runs the country's light rail transit (LRT) and monorail network in the Klang Valley.

Prasarana also operates bus services under the Rapid KL, Rapid Penang and Rapid Kuantan banners.
