KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has appointed Tan Sri Othman Hashim, former Foreign Ministry secretary general, as the new chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

In addition to Othman, PMO has appointed seven other commission members, it said in a statement today.

The seven are: Datuk Seri Mohd Hishamudin Md. Yunus, Datuk Godfrey Gregory, Datuk Mah Weng Kwai, Datuk Lok Yim Pheng, Dr Nik Salida Suhaila Nik Saleh, Jerald S. Joseph, and Medaline Berma.

Apart from Othman and Mohd Hishamudin, the rest are returning commission members. Their three-year appointments, which have been approved by the King, took effect on April 27 this year.

Othman replaces outgoing chairman, Tan Sri Razali Ismail, who resigned in April, two weeks before his three-year tenure was supposed to end. He reportedly said his early resignation was to give more time for Suhakam to receive a new chairman.

Mohd Hishamudin, meanwhile, is a former Court of Appeal judge who is now also chairman of the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC).
