KUALA LUMPUR (April 9): Datuk Osman Sapian has resigned as Johor Menteri Besar effective yesterday, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed today.

Speaking at a press conference outside the Dewan Rakyat, Dr Mahathir said Osman had submitted his resignation letter to both the Prime Minister and Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

However the Johor Sultan has not received the letter as he is currently overseas, explained Dr Mahathir.

“We have not decided on his replacement but according to the agreement within Pakatan Harapan, the Johor Menteri Besar should come from Bersatu (Parti Primbumi Bersatu Malaysia,” Dr Mahathir said.

“As of now, Johor has no Menteri Besar,” he said, adding that there are three to four candidates under consideration as Osman’s replacement.

Osman came under the spotlight as he was notably absent from the 9th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat today.

Media reports speculated his resignation as either due to a fallout with the Johor Palace or to take responsibility over his handling of the Kim Kim River pollution in the State last month, to which Dr Mahathir declined to clarify.
