KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 25): Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) will raise its dividend payout to the Malaysian government to RM16 billion this year from the RM13 billion proposed earlier following the national oil company's better performance in the second quarter (2QFY17) and first half (1HFY17) ended June 30, 2017.

Petronas president and group chief executive officer Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said the proposed RM16 billion dividend for FY17 is similar to the payout for FY15.

The decision was made following a "strong financial performance" by Petronas in 1HFY17, Wan Zulkiflee said at a media conference here today in conjunction with Petronas' results announcement.

In a statement today, Petronas said 2QFY17 net profit jumped 1,163% to RM5.18 billion from RM413 million a year earlier on lower asset net impairment and higher average prices across its products. Revenue rose to RM51.63 billion from RM46.95 billion.

Petronas said 1HFY17 net profit grew to RM13.39 billion from RM3.24 billion a year earlier. Revenue was higher at RM108.15 billion from RM93.7 billion.
