KUALA LUMPUR (June 7): Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) independent non-executive director Datuk Mohd Omar Mustapha has confirmed he has tendered his resignation on June 1, pending acceptance by the national oil major.

In a brief email to The Edge Financial Daily today, Mohd Omar said he has given notice of his resignation as the director, as well as chairman of Petronas' remuneration committee effective June 30, pending acceptance.

"I was appointed as an independent non-executive director of Petronas on Sept 15, 2009.

"According to the Petronas' principles and code of corporate governance, independent non-executive directors are to serve for a maximum tenure of nine years cumulatively from the date of first appointment, and that no extension beyond nine years shall be permitted. This limitation in tenure is to ensure that the highest levels of independence of directors is preserved and maintained as a matter of good corporate governance expected of Petronas," he added.

On Wednesday, The Edge Financial Daily, quoting sources, reported that Petronas chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan and Mohd Omar are slated to resign soon.

According to Petronas' 2017 annual report, Mohd Omar, 47, is chairman of Petronas' remuneration committee since 2015. He was appointed to the board on Sept 15, 2009.

He had built a career as a strategy consultant over two decades, serving in a number of senior roles at McKinsey and Ethos. He had also served on the Advisory Council of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs and on the boards of AirAsia Bhd and Symphony House Bhd.
