KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 10): Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PetChem) has awarded a US$328 million engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract to a consortium led by Italian firm Tecnimont S.p.A for a package of the refinery and petrochemical integrated development (Rapid) project in Pengerang, Johor, relating to the realisation of a polypropylene unit.

The consortium comprises Tecnimont, Beijing-based China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Co Ltd, Tecnimonthqc Sdn Bhd and Tecnimonthqc S. c. a r. l. of Italy.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, PetChem said its wholly-owned subsidiary PRPC Polymers Sdn Bhd has awarded the EPCC contract for Package 27 within the Rapid project to the consortium based on competitive bidding.

The polypropylene unit will have a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year.

"The contract will commence on Nov 10 and the completion date is expected to be on July 9, 2019," it added.

"The board of directors is of the opinion that the award of contract is in the ordinary course of business and is in the best interest of the company," said PetChem.

At Bursa Malaysia today, Petronas Chemicals shares rose one sen or 0.1% at 12:30 p.m. to RM6.92, for a market value of RM55.36 billion. The stock saw some two million shares traded.
