KUALA LUMPUR (May 31): The SRC International Sdn Bhd trial is the first trial in Malaysian history that put a former prime minister in the accused dock. 

Datuk Seri Najib Razak is facing trial for three criminal breach of trust, one abuse of power and three money laundering charges in relation to RM42 million raised by SRC, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). 

Starting tomorrow, for three days, the prosecution and Najib’s defence will go all out to convince Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who is the High Court judge presiding in the SRC trial.

Ad hoc prosecutor Datuk V Sithambaram has confirmed with theedgemarkets.com that the oral submissions will start tomorrow.

Following the end of submissions on Wednesday, Justice Nazlan may take one or two months to deliver his final verdict.

A total of 57 prosecution and 19 defence witnesses, including Najib, had testified in the trial that has spanned almost 90 days since it began in April 2019.

Najib is the highest ranking politician to be on trial in Malaysia. He is also presently on trial for 21 money laundering and four abuse of power charges in relation to US$681 million (RM2.28 billion) of 1MDB funds.

The Pekan Member of Parliament also faces another abuse of power hearing in relation to the 1MDB audit report with former 1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy.

Najib has yet to face trial for another six counts of criminal breach of trust in relation to more than RM6.64 billion in relation to the International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC) settlement and another RM27 million money laundering charge in relation to SRC.

Sithambaram is leading the prosecution team while Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah is representing the former premier.
