KUALA LUMPUR (March 23): Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) on Wednesday said that an investigation currently being carried out by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into alleged corruption by two engineering firms involved in an Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project is not related to MRT Corp or any of its staff.

"If requested, MRT Corp is ready to extend its full cooperation to the authorities in the investigation into this case.

"MRT Corp wishes to remind all its business partners, contractors and subcontractors that it will not tolerate any form of corruption within its project ecosystems.

"Due action, such as contract termination and/or blacklisting, will be taken against any company found to be involved in corruption," MRT Corp said in a brief statement following media reports of the MACC investigation.

On Tuesday (March 22), Bernama reported that three directors and two former directors of an engineering firm had been detained by MACC to assist in a corruption case involving over RM650 million related to the MRT project.

Citing MACC sources, the news agency said four men, including one with the title "Datuk", and a woman, all aged between 43 and 63, were detained when they turned up to give their statements at the MACC headquarters here on Monday (March 21).

The sources added that the two former company directors were believed to have received RM27 million in bribes from another engineering firm as kickback to be appointed as a consultant for the project in 2017.

The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act for soliciting and accepting bribes.
