KUALA LUMPUR (May 11): Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) awarded 27 contracts worth RM11 million for the mass rapid transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line project to bumiputera contractors, during a balloting session today.

The successful contractors were selected from a pool of 257 contractors present at the balloting session and had been shortlisted earlier, said the company.

In a statement today, MRT Corp's chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar said the MRT project has awarded 48% of the value of contracts to bumiputera contractors, which is beyond the target of 43% set by the government.

He said the MRT project’s Bumiputera Agenda was being implemented smoothly and besides the large bumiputera construction companies, the smaller bumiputera contractors had also been beneficiaries of the programme.

“Before today’s session, a total of 145 contracts worth RM95 million had been awarded to bumiputera contractors from Grades G1 to G4. We have another 105 contracts worth RM105 million to award, including today’s 27 contracts which are worth RM13 million in total,” he said.
