KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced a new cluster that was detected in Kuala Muda, Kedah, with two infections.

The index case (case No 9,114) is a man who works as a police officer, according to Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

One of the new COVID-19 cases that was reported today is a co-worker of the index case.

Active case detection and screening of close contacts have been conducted yesterday, according to his statement.

“Up until Aug 14, 2020, 124 close contacts had been screened. From the total, two have been tested positive COVID-19, five were negative [while] 117 are awaiting results.

“All of the positive cases in this cluster were Malaysians. Active case detection is still ongoing and precautionary measures such as cleaning and disinfection processes have been conducted in some identified locations,” added Noor Hisham.

However, he said, the source of infection is still under investigation.

As for the Tawar cluster, Noor Hisham said case No 9,129 which was reported yesterday by the Ministry has been admitted to Penang Hospital, however he said this case remains registered as a Kedah case.

Up until noon today, some 261 people in the Tawar cluster had been screened, whereby 21 of them had tested positive for the virus.

These include 20 positive cases in Kedah and one case in Penang.

New COVID-19 cases in Malaysia rose slightly to 20 today, pushing the number of active cases to nearly reach the 200-mark.

Active cases climbed for five straight days from 166 reported on Monday (Aug 10) to 196 today, as total cases increased to 9,149.

Meanwhile, the death toll stayed at 125 for the second straight week, as no new COVID-19 related deaths were reported today.

However, daily recoveries were lower than new cases reported today, as only seven patients had recovered from the disease.
