KUALA LUMPUR (July 15): The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said today the communications and multimedia (C&M) industry's RM137.74 billion market capitalisation as at June 2020 represents 8.7% of Bursa Malaysia’s market capitalisation of RM1.58 trillion.

Out of the C&M industry's RM137.74 billion market capitalisation, RM130.25 billion was contributed by the telecommunications sector, RM4.75 billion came from the broadcasting industry while RM2.74 billion was derived from the postal and courier segment, according to the MCMC's June 2020 monthly bulletin, which was published on the regulator's website today.

"The telecommunications sector was led by Maxis [Bhd] and Digi[.com Bhd] at 2.66% and 2.12% (of the C&M industry's RM137.74 billion market capitalisation) respectively.

"Since January 2020, the C&M industry is relatively stable in terms of market capitalisation despite the global economic turmoil caused by Covid-19.

"Percentage share of C&M industry on Bursa Malaysia maintained at 8.7% in June 2020 (January 2020: 8.7%)

"Parcel deliveries and telecommunication services experienced a surge in demand throughout the MCO (movement control order) period," the MCMC said.

At a glance, the percentage of the C&M industry's market capitalisation compared to Bursa Malaysia's total dropped to 8.7% in June 2020 from 9.8% and 9% in April and May 2020 respectively.

Across Bursa at 5pm today, the telecommunications and media index closed up 1.74 points or 0.29% at 594.87.

Maxis' share price closed unchanged at RM5.35 for a market capitalisation of RM42.01 billion. Axiata ended down one sen or 0.29% at RM3.41 for a market value of RM31.27 billion.
