KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 9): Malaysia’s unemployment rate was down to 3.7% in July 2022, compared with 3.8% the previous month, as the Malaysian labour market situation further improved due to the continuous operation of all business activities, which led to an increase in demand for employment as well as for goods and services.

The number of unemployed persons declined to 620,700 in July this year from 630,600 in June, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

According to the DOSM, the labour force situation increased 0.2% month-on-month to 16.6 million persons compared with 16.57 million previously.

Thus, a higher labour force participation rate was recorded during the month at 69.6%, said the DOSM.

“The number of employed persons in July 2022 continued to register a positive growth of 0.3% to 15.98 million persons (June 2022: 15.94 million persons).

“In terms of the economic sector, employment in the services sector continued to expand, largely in food and beverages services, wholesale and retail trade, and administrative and support service activities. Likewise, employment in the manufacturing and construction sectors also increased, while employed persons in the agriculture, and mining and quarrying sectors declined,” said the DOSM.

In the meantime, the number of persons outside the labour force continued to record a reduction of 0.1% to 7.25 million persons versus 7.26 million persons in June, the DOSM added.
