KUALA LUMPUR (April 28): Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases jumped to 3,142 today — the highest in two months  — bringing the number of active cases with high transmission risks to 26,719 in the country. The last time the country reported over 3,000 new cases was on Feb 24, with 3,545 confirmed infections in a single day.

The jump past the 3,000 mark came after daily cases stayed above 2,000 for 13 straight days. Cumulative confirmed cases in the country have now reached 401,593.

Among new infections, 3,129 were local transmissions while the remaining 13 cases were imported. Selangor's daily new cases climbed to 1,019 from 750 the day before, lifting the state's tally so far to 130,542, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health (MOH). This was followed by Kelantan (523 cases), Kuala Lumpur (440) and Sarawak (416).

Fifteen more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, raising total fatalities from the coronavirus in the country to 1,477.  Of the latest fatalities, six were reported in Sarawak, two in Kelantan, with one each in Johor, Selangor, Sabah, Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. The deceased were all Malaysians between 30 and 84 years of age.

New recoveries came in lower than new infections at 1,822 today, with total recoveries now at 373,397.

12 more clusters identified

The ministry identified 12 new Covid-19 clusters, including four community clusters, two Education Ministry clusters, two education centre clusters, two workplace clusters, while the remaining are religious centre and high-risk group clusters. This raised active clusters in the country to 370.

The four community clusters were the Ulu Strass cluster in Sarawak (25 infections), the Jalan Maharajalela cluster involving Kedah and Kuala Lumpur (12), the Taman Wira cluster in Johor (26), and the Pintu Air Relau cluster in Kedah (31). The two Education Ministry clusters were the Melugu cluster in Sarawak (13) and the Madai cluster in Sabah (30). The two education centre clusters were the Layar Hujung cluster in Kedah (23) and the Jalan Gombak Dua cluster which spans Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (19).

The two workplace clusters, meanwhile, were the Jalan Rimbunan cluster which spans Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (22), and the Jalan Bakariah cluster in Johor (10).

The remaining two clusters were the Jalan Sekinchan cluster (23) and the Leboh Gambus cluster (61), both in Selangor.

To date, 1,626 clusters have been reported in the country, while 1,256 have been declared ended.
