KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 18): New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia dropped to 660 today, after five straight days of reporting four-digit spikes in infections. Malaysia’s total Covid-19 cases breached 50,000 today to reach 50,390.

This pushed active cases — which carry high transmissions risks — further to 12,814, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Sabah had the most Covid-19 infections, but new cases in the Borneo State dropped to 387 from 499 reported yesterday while new cases in the Klang Valley territories and State dropped to 173 from 518 previously.

In the Klang Valley, Selangor reported 141 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 31 cases and Putrajaya with one case.

“From 173 cases reported in the Klang Valley, 77 cases came from the clusters which have been identified,” told Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah at a media briefing today.

To date, Sabah has a total of 24,269 infections, followed by Selangor with 8,187 and Kuala Lumpur has 4,644.

From 660 new cases nationwide, four imported cases were reported, said Dr Noor Hisham.

This involved two Malaysians who returned from Turkey.  In the meantime, the remaining two imported cases involved foreigners as each of them returned from India and Saudi Arabia, respectively.

Dr Noor Hisham added the total imported cases since the pandemic hit the country stood at 1,278.

Moreover, he noted that some 171 cases were linked to the Covid-19 related prisons and detention centres, including the Tawau PTS cluster with 135 cases, the GK Tawau cluster with 12 cases, the Tembok cluster (9), the Seberang Perai Prison cluster (6), the Rumah Merah cluster (4), the Matambai cluster (4) and the Sandakan Prison cluster (1).

Furthermore, the country’s Covid-19 death toll stood at 322 after the Ministry reported four more fatalities.

“Two deaths were recorded in Sabah and the other two in Perak. The deceased were aged between 59 and 80,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

According to him, three of them had health complications such as high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, stroke and rheumatoid arthritis.

On recoveries, a total of 630 patients have recovered and discharged, bringing the total recoveries so far to 37,254 or 73.9% of total Covid cases.

Currently, 103 patients are being treated in intensive care units, with 41 needing ventilators.
