KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 10): Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) fell 5.2% year-on-year in July 2021, marking its first decline in eight months amid contraction seen in the manufacturing and electric indices, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

In a statement, chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the output of the manufacturing sector fell 6.5% y-o-y in July, after falling 0.2% in the preceding month.

“The sub sectors influencing the decline in the manufacturing sector in July were transport equipment and other manufacturing (-43.8%), non-metallic mineral products, base metals and fabricated metal products (-27.6%) and wood products, furniture, paper products and printing (-23.7%). 

“The domestic-oriented industry declined by 24.7% while the export-oriented industry grew by 1.9%,” he said.

The mining sector’s output grew 0.6% during the month, supported by 4.1% growth in the natural gas index, while the crude oil and condensates index was down 3.6%.

The output of the electric sector fell 6.6% y-o-y.
