KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 19): Malaysia's daily number of Covid-19 cases rose to 27,808 on Friday (Feb 18) from 26,701 a day earlier, the Ministry of Health said.

This brought the nation’s total number of infections to 3.17 million since the pandemic began in early 2020.

At 27,808, the country’s daily figure on Friday is the second highest after the record high of 27,831 reported on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the ministry added that 12,488 individuals were reported on Friday to have recovered from Covid-19.

They brought the cumulative number of persons who had recovered from the coronavirus to 2.9 million so far.

Thirty-six Covid-19-linked deaths were reported on Friday, including 11 brought-in-dead cases, the ministry noted.

This brought the total number of Covid-19-related fatalities to 32,276.

Meanwhile, Bernama, quoting Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah’s statement on Saturday, reported that out of Friday’s 27,808 new cases, 27,689 were local transmissions, while 119 infections were imported.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals' intensive care units stood at 235, including 132 who needed respiratory assistance.

“Overall, the capacity of health facilities of public hospitals can still accommodate Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 cases, but each state is fully prepared with emergency response action plans should they reach full capacity,” Noor Hisham said.

He added that 16 new clusters were detected on Friday, bringing the total number of active clusters to 486.

The national Covid-19 infectivity rate, on the other hand, stood at 1.27, with Labuan recording the highest rate at 1.99, followed by Sarawak’s 1.50 and Sabah's 1.47.
