KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 2): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases rose to 20,988 today, after falling to a nine-day low of 18,762 yesterday, said the Health Ministry.
Daily infections have regularly exceeded the 20,000 mark since the start of August.
The ministry also reported 249 new coronavirus-linked deaths, including 80 brought-in-dead cases.
Sixty-one deaths were reported in Selangor, 40 in Johor, 39 in Penang, 33 in Sabah, 16 in Kedah, 16 in Kuala Lumpur, 13 in Melaka, nine in Perak, eight in Sarawak, six in Kelantan, four in Negeri Sembilan, three in Terengganu and one in Perlis.
This raised total fatalities to 17,191, ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.
He said 9,860 cases or 47% of today’s cases have no history of vaccination.
Meanwhile, 6,133 patients (29.2%) had completed their two-dose vaccination and 4,995 (23.8%) had been jabbed at least once.
Selangor led with the highest number of new cases at 4,073, followed by Sarawak (2,992), Kedah (2,455), Sabah (2,329), Johor (2,145), Penang (1,600) and Kelantan (1,247).
They were followed by Perak (990), Terengganu (987), Kuala Lumpur (731), Pahang (599), Melaka (407), Negeri Sembilan (301), Perlis (90), Putrajaya (37) and Labuan (five).
The country’s cumulative confirmed Covid-19 infections now stand at 1.79 million.
Active cases fall for second straight day
Dr Noor Hisham said active cases fell for the second day running to 262,540, as new recoveries, at 23,473, were higher than new infections.
Total recoveries increased to 1.51 million, or 84.3% of overall infections.
As of noon today, 1,417 patients were being treated in intensive care units. Of them, 1,001 were confirmed Covid-19 cases, while the other 416 were suspected, probable and still-under–investigation cases.
A total of 783 patients needed respiratory assistance, including 470 cases or 60% who were confirmed positive for the virus.
31 new clusters identified with 1,149 infections
The Health Ministry identified 31 more Covid-19 clusters as of noon today, with a total of 1,149 infections.
They comprised 17 workplace clusters, nine community clusters, four high-risk group clusters and an education cluster.
To date, the ministry has reported 4,804 clusters nationwide, including 3,316 that have been declared ended.
