KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): A total of 19,268 new Covid-19 infections were reported across Malaysia today, down from 20,579 yesterday, as the Klang Valley recorded a fourth straight decline in daily cases.

Selangor remained as the state with the most daily cases with 3,567, but the figure was below the 4,591 reported yesterday, according to Health Ministry data.

Elsewhere in the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur posted 672 cases while Putrajaya registered 41.

Sabah reported 2,310 new infections, followed by Johor (2,265), Kedah (2,084), Sarawak (2,028), Penang (1,780), Kelantan (1,308) and Perak (1,104).

Of the remaining states and federal territory, Pahang posted 788 cases, followed by Terengganu (544), Melaka (395), Negeri Sembilan (269), Perlis (71) and Labuan (two).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said 295 deaths linked to the virus were recorded in the 24 hours as of noon today.

In all, Malaysia has registered 1.73 million confirmed Covid-19 cases and 16,382 deaths.

Active cases dip

The number of active cases dipped to 265,713 today from 267,997 yesterday, as daily recoveries of 21,257 outpaced new infections. This is the fourth day of decline in active cases since June 25.

Meanwhile, the ministry reported that 14,664 cases or 76.1% of the new infections today comprised patients who either were not vaccinated or had received only one dose of the vaccine.

Also, 97.9% of the new cases reported today had either no symptoms (Category 1) or little symptoms (Category 2). The balance 2.1% were spread across Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

Dr Noor Hisham said the number of patients being treated in intensive care units rose to 1,033 from 1,009 yesterday. Of them, 476 patients are on ventilators.

36 new clusters detected, half of them from workplaces

Dr Noor Hisham said 36 new clusters were identified today, with a total of 1,196 infections recorded among them.

They comprised 18 workplace clusters which contributed 759 cases. There were also 13 community clusters which contributed 288 cases.

The country has reported 4,709 clusters so far, including 3,222 that have been declared ended, leaving 1,487 that are still active.
