KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 2): Malaysian exports fell 3.1% to RM76.2 billion in June 2019 from a year earlier due to a decline in sales of electrical and electronic besides timber products, the Statistics Department said today.

In a statement today, the department's chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said imports decreased 9.2% to RM65.9 billion on lower purchases of capital, intermediate and consumption goods.

"Imports posted a faster rate of contraction compared to exports, resulting in a larger trade surplus of RM10.3 billion.

"Total trade, which was valued at RM142.1 billion, decreased RM9.1 billion or 6.0% compared to June 2018," Mohd Uzir said.

For the second quarter, the department said exports increased 0.2% to RM245.5 billion from a year earlier while imports decreased 1.2% to RM215.3 billion.
