KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 6): Trading remained lacklustre on Bursa Malaysia today on continued lack of interest, but the FBM KLCI managed to edge higher.

The benchmark index closed 4.76 points or 0.29% higher at 1,629.73.

An analyst said there was not much excitement in the market, with very low volume registered for the day.

“The trading volume is very thin. Despite the market moving up slightly today, there is not much excitement in it. In addition to this, the number of stocks that declined was also higher than the gainers,” Mercury Securities Sdn Bhd research head Edmund Tham told theedgemarkets.com.

Across the region, Japan’s Nikkei share average rose 0.47% as strong U.S. economic data helped calm worries about instability in the European Union, after Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s resignation.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index gained 0.75%, while South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.35%. Singapore’s STI also increased by 0.21%.

In the local market, total trading volume was 1.09 billion shares, worth RM1.55 billion.

There were 304 gainers against 409 losers, with another 368 counters unchanged.

APFT Bhd was the most active counter, with 46.6 million shares exchanging hands. Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd was the top gainer, while British American Tobacco (M) Bhd led decliners.
