KUALA LUMPUR (May 27): The FBM KLCI edged up cautiously this morning against the backdrop of firmer regional markets.

At 9.07am, the FBM KLCI was up 1.64 points to 1,632.73.

The top gainers included British American Tobacco (M) Bhd, Tasek Corporation Bhd, AirAsia Bhd, SAM Engineering & Equipment Bhd, OldTown Bhd, Teck Guan Perdana Bhd, IHH Healthcare Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd.

Asian stocks pulled ahead on Friday after patches of U.S. data continued to paint the world's largest economy in a positive light, while the dollar was on the defensive against its major peers, according to Reuters.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.2 percent to a two-week high. The index was on track to gain 2.3 percent this week, it said.

JF Apex Securities Research in a market preview today said US markets were flat as investors await comments from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen on hints of potential interest rate hike.

It said that earlier, European stocks registered slight gains after oil prices retreated from the highest point in 2016.

“On the local market, the FBM KLCI was flat after ending 0.13 points higher at 1631.09 points.

“Following the mixed performance in the US and Europe, the FBM KLCI is expected to remain sideways above the support of 1615 points,” it said.
