(Aug 21): The Permaisuri of Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah has expressed concern for Malaysian students in the United Kingdom who could be facing financial difficulties because of the weaker ringgit.

"How much can their parents or families send them? I am here in the UK on holiday, but I am lucky because I can afford the luxuries here.

"To the Malaysians who are living or studying in the UK please let me know how I can help. Is there a student body which can help with students who need financial help?" Raja Zarith, who is also an Oxford graduate, wrote on her Facebook page.

The post has garnered more than 3,700 shares; 12,000 likes; and 600 comments.

The ringgit has dropped 6.6% versus the US dollar this month, battered by political scandals, slumping oil prices and China’s devaluation of the yuan.

As of today, the Malaysian currency stands at 6.53 against the pound sterling and 4.16 against the US dollar. – The Malaysian Insider
