KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 27): A high number of potential employees are dissatisfied with the job hunting process practised by employers, a survey by Jobstreet.com shows.

The survey, conducted in September this year with the participation of 921 respondents across various positions and industries, saw 73% of respondents disclosing that they did not receive responses from the companies they applied to for jobs.

A total of 40% of the respondents revealed that job advertisements do not provide sufficient information on the companies and their work environments.

In terms of the problems they encountered during interviews, 43% of respondents said that interviewers did not seem interested in hiring them, but were fishing for information about their previous or current employers.

Another 31% believed that interviewers did not spend enough time in probing about their experiences, capabilities and potentials.

JobStreet.com country manager Chook Yuh Yng said candidates often find themselves in a state of anticipation and are sometimes frustrated when they get no feedback from employers.

"Unfortunately, some employers are not considerate enough to respond while some are genuinely busy. Regardless of the situation, candidates should continue to apply for jobs during the processing period to avoid disappointments and to create more career options for themselves," she said.

The survey also delved into the factors that would prevent candidates from applying to certain companies.

It showed that 38% of candidates avoid job advertisements that withhold the name of the company while 19% of respondents also refrain from applying for jobs that require them to work on weekends.

A total of 28% of the respondents said they must be able to view detailed information about the job responsibilities and the background of the company.

As salary is often perceived to be a determining factor when choosing a job, 17% of candidates also wish to see salary information in the job advertisement.

To ensure interviews are more pleasant experience for candidates, 34% of respondents suggested that employers should be more approachable and friendly during the interviews, while 24% suggested that the interviewers should be more prepared for the interview by reading their resumes beforehand and asking the right questions.

Chook said JobStreet.com offers employers products and services designed to simplify application processes with its SiVa recruitment system.

"The system allows employers to send out an automated 'Acknowledgement Letter' and 'Reject Letter' to inform candidates about their application statuses and it also helps them organise their administrative procedures", she added.
