KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 19): Heineken Malaysia Bhd was recognised as Company of the Year for Environmental Sustainability and Social Initiatives at the Sustainability and CSR Malaysia Awards recently.

The brewer also received the Long-Standing Excellence in Sustainability Award, in recognition of its continued sustainability commitment.

In a statement on Thursday (Aug 18), Heineken Malaysia managing director Roland Bala said as a responsible and progressive brewer, the company’s global Brew a Better World sustainability strategy ensures the right things are done to protect the environment.

According to Bala, the company has an ambitious commitment to reaching net zero carbon emissions in production by 2030, and across its value chain by 2040.

He said that as of June, the brewer had reduced its carbon emissions in production by 19%, compared to its 2018 baseline.

“Accounting for the period before March, it is estimated that 75% of electricity consumption at Heineken Malaysia’s Sungei Way Brewery in Petaling Jaya will be [generated] from renewable sources in 2022.

“Additionally, on-site renewable electricity generation (solar photovoltaic) installation is under way, with target completion in the first quarter of 2023.

“Since 2017, Heineken Malaysia has also achieved zero waste-to-landfill by recycling and upcycling 100% of its by-products and production waste,” he said.

Bala said as a result of these initiatives, Heineken Malaysia expects to reduce 86% of carbon emissions in production by 2025.

At the midday break on Friday, Heineken Malaysia was 2.44% or 60 sen higher at RM25.20, with 70,900 shares traded.
