KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 11): Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 cases continued its upward trend, climbing to 20,939 on Friday (Feb 11, 2022), compared with 19,090 a day earlier. The last time the country reported over 20,000 daily cases was on Sept 10 last year (21,176 cases).

Selangor led the country with most Covid-19 cases on Friday at 4,291, followed by Sabah (3,361) and Johor (2,860).

"Daily breakdown still holding #VaccinesWork," Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin tweeted on Friday. He was referring to a tweet by Health Director General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah on the breakdown of patients by category.

According to Dr Noor Hisham's tweet, 5,181 cases, representing 24.74% of daily cases nationwide, fell into category one. A total of 15,640 cases or 74.7% fell into category two, 95 cases fell into category three, followed by category four (13 cases) and category five (10 cases).

Category one patients comprise those who are asymptomatic, while category two patients comprise those who are symptomatic but with no pneumonia, the ministry said. Patients in category three comprise symptomatic individuals with pneumonia, according to the ministry.

Meanwhile, the ministry said patients in category four comprise symptomatic individuals with pneumonia and that these patients require supplemental oxygen. Category five patients comprise those who are critically ill with multi-organ involvement.

The tally of confirmed infections due to the coronavirus increased further to 2,996,361. Meanwhile, 2,841,271 patients have recovered from the disease after 5,807 patients were discharged on Friday. 

Active cases climb to 107,883 on Feb 10 – highest level seen since Oct 12 last year 

Active cases which carry high transmission risks climbed to 107,883 on Thursday (Feb 10) – the highest level seen since Oct 12, 2021 (108,998). 

A total of 96,655 active cases were undergoing home quarantine, 5,751 cases were treated in low-risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC), 5,319 patients were admitted to hospitals and 158 patients were treated in intensive care units.

According to the Ministry of Health's COVIDNOW portal, the average occupancy rate of the country's hospital beds on Thursday stood at 68.4%. The average occupancy rate for the Klang Valley – comprising Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya – stood at 61.2%.   

There were 10 deaths recorded on Thursday – two each in Perak and Selangor, and one each in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Penang – raising the Covid-19 death toll so far to 32,075.
