KUALA LUMPUR: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s hope for a private member’s bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 to have been read yesterday was dashed after it was deferred to the next sitting of Parliament.

The party’s paper Harakahdaily reported that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim announced the new development yesterday morning. The report said the move was to allow debate on the controversial amendments to the Sedition Act 1948. Despite strong opposition from his Pakatan Rakyat partners, Abdul Hadi went ahead to push for his hudud bill to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat before the sitting ended yesterday and expressed dissatisfaction that the bill has been placed last in the order list. He sent a notice to Parliament on March 18 on the bill after the Kelantan state assembly unanimously approved the Syariah Criminal Code 11 1993 (Amendment 2015).

The move would allow Abdul Hadi to table the bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or what is known as Act 355, paving the way for certain categories under the hudud to be implemented in Kelantan. — The Malaysian Insider
