KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 2): The government has set the maximum ceiling prices for Covid-19 self-test kits, with the wholesale price fixed at RM16 a unit and a retail price of RM19.90 a unit, which will take effect from Sept 5.

The pricing was made to ensure the self-test kits are affordable for businesses as well as the public, according to a joint statement today by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

They said the demand for Covid-19 antigen rapid test kits (self-testing) is expected to increase as more of the public will conduct self-testing to curb the spread of the virus.

“KPDNHEP has engaged with all local industry players and importers in determining a reasonable control price for all parties. KPDNHEP also expects the effects of competition to further stabilise the selling price at all levels as is the case with the current face mask price,” they said.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs will set the maximum wholesale and retail prices for the test kits under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Control of Supply Act 1961.

In a tweet today, Khairy also added: “We will also be exploring bulk purchase options to drive the price down further and also look at providing free kits for B40 families.”

Furthermore, the ministers also reminded that stern action will be taken against traders who fail to comply with all the regulations.

Any trader who commits an offence will be prosecuted under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and may be subject to penalties if they sell self-test kits that exceed the maximum price.

Individuals may be fined up to RM100,000 or imprisoned not exceeding three years or both or compounded up to RM50,000.

Companies, meanwhile, can be fined up to RM500,000 or compounded up to RM250,000.

If there are traders who do not comply with all these regulations, consumers can make their complaints through the [email protected] portal, call centre at 1800 886 800, email via [email protected], smartphone application such as Ez ADU, Enforcement Command Centre (ECC) at 03-8882 6245/6088 or via WhatsApp at 019-279 4317.
