IPOH (April 19): Ipoh Barat incumbent MP M Kula Segaran will be defending his seat, ending speculation that he was poised to move to Johor.

This was revealed when the DAP line-up for Perak was announced last night. DAP Perak will contest in 18 state and seven parliamentary seats – the same number of seats as in the 2008 election.

Ten new faces will contest in the coming elections out of the 18 state seats. State DAP bigwig Nga Kor Ming will now contest in Kepayang. His old state seat which he won in 2008, Pantai Remis, will be contested by Wong May Ing, who served as DAP Perak chairman Ngeh Koo Ham's private secretary.

Another notable name missing in the line-up is the popular Jalong assembly member Leong Mee Meng who has been dropped and replaced by newbie Loh Sze Yee. Kula's aide Cheong Chee Khing will be one of the newbies contesting in Bercham.

It looks as though a three-corner fight is shaping up in Jelapang as DAP has officially named Teh Hock Ke as its candidate. Parti Socialis Malaysia (PSM) local leader M Saraswathy had been hopeful that DAP would give way and allow her to contest in the seat which was won by DAP's Hee Yit Foong in 2008. Hee’s defection a year later allowed the state to fall into Barisan Nasional's hands.

Out of the seven parliamentary seats, DAP will field four new faces. Thomas Su Keong Siong will replace DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang in Ipoh Timur; V Sivakumar, former Perak speaker and Tronoh assembly member will contest in Batu Gajah, replacing Fong Poh Kuan; while Sean Leong Peng will replace M Manogaran in Teluk Intan. The latter is moving to the Cameron Highlands seat.

During the introduction of the candidates in Ipoh last night, Ngeh brought up the complications the party is facing with the Registrar of Societies' (RoS), claiming that it was part of a dirty tricks campaign against DAP.

"The RoS does not recognise the Central Executive Committee (CEC) so there is no one (recognised by RoS) to sign the nomination forms. This means that we cannot run using the Rocket symbol. This is a dirty, disgusting and malicious (ploy),” he said.

Meanwhile, PAS also announced its list of candidates in the same event last night. It will contest 22 state seats and 7 parliamentary seats in the coming polls.

Perak PAS state commissioner Abu Bakar Hussain said that the party will field 41% new faces and 59% old faces in this election.

PKR Perak state chief Dr Nur Manuty only announced 19 candidates for state seats, and 9 candidate for parliamentary seats.

The party contested 20 state seats and 10 parliamentary seats, with PSM contesting under the PKR ticket.

PKR gave the Changkat Jering state seat to PAS’ Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin, who is also Perak Pakatan Rakyat chairman

When asked, Nur said that the compromise was to avoid a three cornered fight in any seats and to ensure Pakatan Rakyat wins in this election.

Nur said in the press conference after the announcement that PKR and PAS had reached consensus that the Manong state seat will be contest by PKR in the 14th general election.
