KUALA LUMPUR (April 22): The government today announced that it had agreed to appoint a 13-member advisory council chaired by former Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria for the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), with the role of coming up with a strategy and action plan to strengthen the centre further.

This is to increase the activity of the AIAC and also function to assist AIAC director Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

Besides Arifin, who will chair the council, the other members include Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun, former Federal Court judges Tan Sri Sulong Matjeraie and Datuk Dr Prasad Sandosham Abraham, lawyers Raja Datuk Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan, Datuk Nitin Nadkarni and Tan Swee Im, as well as Talent Corp Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) chairman Dr Wafi Nazrin Dr Abdul Hamid.

The others are: Professor Doug Jones AO (Australia); Dr Hassan Arab (the United Arab Emirates); Monica Feria Tinta (the UK); Khawar Qureshi Queen's Counsel (the UK); and Vyapak Desai (India).

The AIAC is a global hub for dispute resolution, backed by years of experience, and strives to provide the best possible services and solutions from Malaysia. It is housed at Bangunan Sulaiman.
