KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has urged the government to resolve the weakening of the ringgit rather than prioritising other matters like restricting social media.

“I hope our government focuses on the ringgit as opposed to banning the Internet. I think we should get our priorities right,” he said yesterday.

“We should be thinking on how we can best grow Malaysia and create jobs. Ringgit is at RM4 (against the US dollar) now. Isn’t it better that we focus on our economy?” Fernandes added.

The government had earlier announced that it was looking to introduce amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 in order to further regulate Internet activities.

The proposed law is expected to be tabled in October.
