SINGAPORE (June 1): No new charges were pressed against former BSI banker Yeo Jiawei on Wednesday. A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for the morning of July 28 and the actual trial might take place in September.

In the meantime, 33-year-old Yeo, described as the central figure at the widening probe into 1MDB, remains in remand, as he had for nearly seven weeks.

Prosecution, represented by chief prosecutor Tan Ken Hwee, reiterates the offer to start trials against Yeo for the two obstruction of justice charges so that the procedures can get moving. “We are ready to go anytime,” said Tan to reporters today.

Yeo, the former wealth planner at BSI is alleged to have tampered with witnesses including his former colleagues when they were questioned by the Commercial Affairs Department.

For now, Yeo faces a total of nine charges. But more charges might be filed against him as the investigation develops over the next few months, said Tan.

Yeo’s defence team from Harry Elias Partnership, represented today by senior legal associate Nicklaus Tan, prefers to have Yeo on trial for all charges together instead of separately.

Besides Yeo, financial regulator Monetary Authority of Singapore has named five other former BSI bankers for possible investigation for their roles in this episode.

Chief prosecutor Tan would not comment if these five will be facing charges soon.
