(July 22): The Edge Media Group, which has been in the forefront in reporting the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, is not the cause of the government-owned entity's troubles today, said PAS.

Praising the bravery of The Edge publisher and CEO Ho Kay Tat who defended the business paper's extensive reporting on the issue, PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the special task force currently probing into 1MDB's operations should use The Edge's reports to help in its investigations, instead of punishing the media group.

"The bravery of The Edge through the group's chief executive officer in defending its reports has strengthened the credibility of its expose on the 1MDB cash flow, compared with the partial denial by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and 1MDB.

"As it is, The Edge is not the cause of 1MDB's problems which has become an international issue and an embarrassment to the country today," he said in a statement today.

He said people should be aware of the attempt to divert the focus of investigations to determine if public funds have been misused, allegedly by 1MDB and Umno leaders, to other sensational stories.

Tuan Ibrahim could be referring to the expose by Umno minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan who claimed last Wednesday that opposition politicians had worked with whistle-blower site Sarawak Report to forge documents leading to the many exposes on 1MDB.

He had said there was "solid evidence", including an alleged video confession, provided in a police report lodged by Ramesh Rao Krishnan Naidu, the president of Pertubuhan Minda dan Sosial Prihatin (PMSP), a Barisan Nasional-friendly non-governmental organisation.

A police report named Lester Melanyi as a former editor who worked with Sarawak Report, but this was dismissed by the site’s founder and editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown.

However, Melanyi insisted that his information was genuine and stood by his claims.

Following this, Sarawak Report said today it would sue Rahman, pro-government newspaper New Straits Times and others for the "malicious" falsehoods they promoted to destroy the credibility of the whistle-blower site. – The Malaysian Insider
