KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary has hired Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (Petronas) former president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin (pictured) as chairman of his flagship company, DRB-Hicom Bhd.

The appointment comes after Datuk Mohammad Zainal Shaari resigned from the post, with the resignation to take effect on Aug 31, according to a stock exchange filing by DRB-Hicom.

Wan Zul is currently the non-executive group chairman of Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Malaysia Aviation Group, positions he held since July 1, after he decided to leave the national oil firm, at which he has built his career for over 30 years.

Wan Zul took over the helm of Petronas in April 2015, a few months before the meltdown of the global crude oil prices in October that year.

Wan Zul is not the first former president and CEO of Petronas who joined Syed Mokhtar’s group of companies. His predecessor, Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas was, until recently, the chairman of MMC Corp Bhd, before he relinquished the position to pursue other business commitments.

On Aug 24, MMC Corp announced that Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan, the ex-CEO of Bursa Malaysia, has been appointed its new independent and non-executive chairman, with effect from Sept 1.
