KUALA LUMPUR (June 28): With a great amount of data comes the need for more space to store, process and interact with it. 

Over the years, data usage across the world has grown exponentially, thanks to technology advancements, creating a demand for more efficient data centres. 

Hyperscale data centres were developed in response to this demand and the tech to run these centres are still being fine-tuned.

Firstly, hyperscale data centres are not friendly to the environment, so the various players are considering different technologies to reduce their carbon footprint such as silicon photonic (to reduce heat generation and energy consumption) and sticking them in the middle of the ocean (also known as liquid immersion) for the same reasons. 

They are also looking at optical computing for faster data transfers between the storage and processing units of these centres.

Tech and logistical challenges remain a big hurdle in Malaysia, as there are a lot of loopholes to jump through to apply to build a data centre here. 

Industry players are calling for a consolidated organisation made up of the relevant governmental bodies to be formed, making it more attractive for data centre operators to set up camp here.
