KUALA LUMPUR (March 27): In a bid to ensure food security during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, the government has announced an RM1 billion allocation for the nation’s food security fund.

“Amid these critical times, it is important to ensure that the supply of food is sufficient. The government will allocate RM1 billion to the food security fund.

“Besides that, the government will continue to provide assistance to farmers and fishermen in the form of input assistance for agriculture, livestock farming and fishery to encourage domestic production,” said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The government is also allocating RM100 million towards the development of food storage and distribution infrastructure, as well as integrated planting.

Furthermore, special funds of between RM100,000 and RM200,000 will be allocated to each farmers’ organisation and fishermen’s organisation that are able to develop short-term agrofood projects that can produce food within three to six months to ensure food supply is sufficient.

The funds to be granted to these organisations amount to a total allocation of RM64.4 million.
